چکیده

What is enterography? It is worth taking a moment to explain the term ‘enterography’, as it is often misunderstood. Enterography is an examination optimized for evaluation of the small bowel. As such, oral contrast is administered, which is designed both to be low in attenuation/signal compared with the enhancing mucosa and to distend the small bowel. The contrast should be low in attenuation/ signal compared with the mucosa to permit detection of subtle hyperenhancement, which is among the earliest radiological signs of IBD [4]. Perhaps more importantly, adequate bowel distension permits confident differentiation of small bowel thickening and stricture from loops that are simply collapsed [5]. Various agents and concoctions have been tried, but many institutions use VoLumen (Bracco, Milan, Italy), which we use for both CTE and MRE. Unfortunately, the small bowel distension achieved with VoLumen is variable depending on the GI transit time and, to a large degree, on the patient’s willingness to drink it while suffering from a possible flare of IBD. However, it is currently the best available option in lieu of CT or MR enteroclysis, which is an invasive technique requiring naso-duodenal intubation to instill oral contrast via an electric pump.

MR imaging of the small bowel – technique and current applications

Increased importance has been placed on evaluating small bowel disease to guide management in often chronic conditions such as Crohn’s disease. Imaging of the small bowel has always played a key role in diagnosis and decision making. Traditionally, fluoroscopic studies such as barium follow through and small bowel enteroclysis have been used. More recently, the gold standard of evaluating the s...

OBJECTIVE: The present study was aimed at demonstrating the value of computed tomography enterography (CT enterography) and how this imaging method can be useful in the diagnostic elucidation and assessment of patients with small bowel diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of 35 patients submitted to CT enterography in a 16-row multidetector CT equipment from May/2008 to Mar...

Prospective comparison of state-of-the-art MR enterography and CT enterography in small-bowel Crohn's disease.

OBJECTIVE The objective of our study was to prospectively obtain pilot data on the accuracy of MR enterography for detecting small-bowel Crohn's disease compared with CT enterography and with a clinical reference standard based on imaging, clinical information, and ileocolonoscopy. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The study group for this blinded prospective study was composed of 33 patients with suspect...

Enteroscopy in small-bowel Crohn’s disease (CD): hypes and hopes

Crohn’s disease (CD) is a chronic inflammation of the intestines that follows a relapsing or remitting course. Endoscopic imaging and radiological imaging are essential for diagnosis and to assess disease severity, response to treatment, and complications. CD most commonly affects the terminal ileum, which is accessible with conventional ileocolonoscopy. Nevertheless, jejunal lesions are presen...

Advances in imaging in Crohn's disease.

Radiologic evaluation plays a critical role in the assessment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, particularly Crohn’s disease (CD). In UC, colonic mucosa is readily accessible for endoscopic evaluation; thus radiologic techniques are less useful. Traditionally, fluoroscopic studies including the small bowel series and barium enema, along with CT, were the mainstays of imaging. These m...
